The Dutch decided to demolish the city defense wall and guard posts in Semarang. The fort was demolished to prepare the way for the development of Semarang as a modern city, with plans to build a railway and concentrate the city's administrative infrastructure and commerce in the west; Jalan Bodjong, Jalan Randusari, and Jalan Mataram, as well as open a harbour canal named Kali Baru so that small merchant ships could dock at Berok Bridge.
