After Amangkurat I ascended the throne, Mataram Kingdom formed a partnership with the VOC. Rijkloff van Goens was sent as a VOC secunde (ambassador) who travelled to the Mataram Palace via Semarang.

Related events:

1646 - In the first half of February, Amangkurat I partnered with the VOC. VOC was granted permission by the Mataram Kingdom to build trading posts in Mataram's territory, and vice versa; Mataram gained the freedom to trade in VOC's territory.

1649 - Rijjckloff van Goens for the second time tried to establish relation with Mataram; on this occasion, Rijjckloff came as a leader of VOC's diplomatic campaign. Although the relationship between Mataram and VOC has had its ups and downs, the attempt to restore the deteriorated relation was still being pursued by the VOC. The main reason was Mataram is the most prominent neighbour and has an important role in rice supply.
