Samarang-Joana Stoomtram Maatschappij (SJS) first built inner-city routes using locomotives with the B12 series as the main locomotive of its service. The B12 series has a wheel arrangement according to Whyte notation classified into 0-4-0 Tr notation, and is one of the simplest types or types; with 2 (two) axles and 4 (four) wheels in pairs, and all wheels are driven, while the code "TR" indicates the type of locomotive has a rack-equipped locomotive tank.

In addition to the B12 series, the B27 and D15 series also operate on the inner city line (stadlijnen), with a rail width of 1,067 mm; using a medium-width track (normaalspoor), in accordance with the initial projection that the line would only be used to serve transport within the city of Semarang and its surroundings.

Carriages used by SJS
In providing land transportation services, the existence of carriages other than locomotives is indispensable. Carriages in a railway series have a function as containers for commodities to be distributed or to transport passengers from one location to another. In addition, carriages are generally also used as containers for transporting materials supporting the operation of the locomotive train, such as fuel and water as the main driving force of the steam engine.
In the early days of the SJS, locomotives, trams, and carriages were manufactured and imported from Europe. With regard to the carriages and locomotive parts, a factory specialising in the production of these equipment was built in Semarang in 1890, thus saving time and operating costs.
During its operation, SJS used a total of 619 carriages of various types and sizes, some of which include:
